  1. For commercial dance, do you have to have experience with jazz, tap, and ballet because I only have experience with jazz and ballet

  2. Dear OCSAMAMA,
my daughter has been accepted into VA 7th Grade. Yeah! she is wondering about the math test that she will be taking at the enrollment meeting. would you mind telling us a bit more about that? we have been in a private school all these years so are pretty clueless.
    thanks.

    • Hello, and congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance into VA!

It’s an assessment math test is to determine placement for next year; while most 7th graders will go into pre-algebra, some will test well enough that they will have the choice to go into algebra if they wish. It takes about an hour or so and hasn’t been too traumatic in my experience having had two kids take it. It’s one of those things you can’t really prepare for; it’s just to see how much they already know. I hope this helps!

  3. Hello,

I was wondering what writing class do you recommend at OCSA? They opened the online applications for the summer courses. There are two separate writing courses, and I’m not sure what to apply for?!?

Thank you for your help! :)

    • Hi Sun,

Click through here and you can read more in depth descriptions of the classes. They have little different focus with Dramatic Writing more concentrated on writing movies and plays and Creative Writing offering a broader overview of a variety of types and styles of writing. Both of them have great teachers from the Creative Writing Conservatory. They each have different grade level recommendations so you’ll have to consider that as well as whether you are interested in a morning or afternoon session. There is one of each.

My daughter took the Dramatic Writing class (or a variation of it) with Ms. Levine a couple of years ago and it was a great experience. In my opinion, you probably won’t go wrong no matter which one you choose.

      Have fun!

      • I want to take the creative writing class, but I’m worried I go over the age limit for the class. The creative writing class says it’s for grades 4-9, but I’m going into 10th grade this fall. Am I still eligible for the creative class? :(

Thank you for your help! :)

        • Hi Sun,

Based on your grade level, it looks like you would need to register for Dramatic Writing. My daughter took this one and it was a great class and a good experience for her. Ms. Levine teaches both classes. Honestly, I just think Dramatic Writing is at a little higher level since overall, it’s geared toward older kids. That is the class for you!

          • Does the class also teach about writing short stories and poems? I just started writing, and I was wondering if the Dramatic Writing class covered those materials too? Also, is there any writing advice you could give me? My round one audition was denied for this year, and I just want to try one more time next year.

Thank you so much for your help!

            • Hi Sun!

No, it really doesn’t, if it’s the same class my daughter took and it sounds like it is. It was more focused on writing scripts/plays. In fact, all the kids worked on their own then performed them in groups at the end of the session. It was really cool!

Here is my advice: Email Pat McMaster and ask her if it would be possible for you to enroll in the Creative Writing session and tell her why you’re interested. She coordinates the Community Arts program and enrollment. Maybe she’ll make an exception for you. It can’t hurt to ask.

As for improving your writing, I think you are doing the right thing. Taking one of these classes will give you an opportunity to work directly with a creative writing conservatory teacher and get feedback. Any classes you can take, as much reading as you can do, as much practice and free-writing you can get in…these are all things that can help you become a better writer. Check in your community too. Sometimes affordable classes are offered through the city. We live in Orange and there are some great options. Look into it.

It’s not just your writing they look at in Round 1, but also how your portfolio is organized and whether or not it is professional and close to error-free. Past school work is not recommended and everything should be typed (nothing handwritten). Also, I would recommend turning in your application and portfolio early; this year there seemed to be a huge crunch at the end and yours might get noticed more if it comes in before the rush.

Good luck to you! I wish you all the best :)

  4. Hi, does anyone have any idea approx how many spots are available for 9th grade M&T? We are from out of state so didn’t make it to one of the preview weekends. Although we did get a tour earlier in the year the tour guide didn’t have that information available. We are still waiting for the 1st round audion to be reviewed.

    • I’ve recently had my DM audition last week and I’ve heard from students attending OCSA that they’re accepting very little DM applicants this year as the conservatory is new.

  6. I recently got into contact with an admissions rep. and we resolved a lot of my application problems after the phone call. She also told me when the next auditions are for DM and VA. Tomorrow is the DM audition and I’m worried that my application (which was submitted weeks before the deadline) has been put into the “audition wait list” even though I’ve been academically approved. Do you think you help me with this dilemma? How is your daughter coping with her VA audition wait?

  7. Hi, I am an OCSA parent too, anxiously waiting to hear about a conservatory transfer… the fun never ends!

Regarding the application deadline – according to the website, OCSA is still accepting applications for 2013-14 school year thru June 1st.

From the website ‘General Admissions FAQ’:
Those that apply between January 19, 2013 and March 15, 2013 will be scheduled into an audition on an as-available basis. Those that apply after January 18 and are unable to be scheduled into an audition will be placed on hold and will be notified if future auditions become available.

Honestly, for the conservatories that have 2 round audition process, there is no guarantee of a live audition anyways… so I have to wonder if the January 18th deadline is truly meaningful for those conservatories?

    Posted by plainjayne | February 22, 2013, 2:09 pm
    • Helloooo!

Great to hear from you. I think the deadline is meaningful in that those who submitted their applications by January 18th definitely will be given priority for the audition spots that are available. If you turn in an application after the deadline, it’s kind of like being on the ‘audition wait list’ meaning that if there aren’t enough candidates (really??? I guess it could happen now that they are weeding out applicants through the two-round application process…) you might be called and considered for one of those spots.

Like always, that’s my 2 cents!

Has your OCSA student been notified yet/had an audition? I have two students requesting conservatory transfers and STILL haven’t heard anything about one of them…ONE MONTH AND FOUR DAYS later. Sigh.

      OCSAmama

      Posted by OCSAmama | February 22, 2013, 2:50 pm
      • NO… we haven’t heard anything yet either…UGH! On the bright side, none my daughter’s friends, who are requesting transfers, have heard back either. I have to wonder if they are focusing on auditioning new students first, and holding off on the transfers?

What makes me most anxious is hearing that some students are being given very little notice for the live auditions – for example: notified on a Weds for a Saturday IA audition… and that requires quite a bit of prep! My daughter worked hard in preparing her video submittal, but honestly hasn’t rehearsed much since then… lol!

  9. Hi,

My son is planning to apply for the pianist program for the next academic year (2013-14) for 7th grade. One of the application requremnt is to send a DVD. My question is will a homemader DVD do in this cas(like recording using a camcorder and then making a DVD out of it) or studio recording is the best way to go ,obviously there is a sound quality difference between these two. Any suggestions will be really helpful.

    Thanks,
    Sumana.

    Posted by Let's Read | February 20, 2013, 11:08 am
    • Hi Sumana!

I believe that the home made DVD is perfectly fine for the Round One Audition and truthfully, from reading the audition requirements, it sounds like that is what they are expecting. Just follow the instructions carefully and you should be good. You say your son is planning to apply for the 2013-14 school year? I hope that you meant 2014-15 because the application deadline for next year has passed already :( My advice would be to attend a Preview Day and ask the Conservatory Director yourself about the home made vs. professional DVD, but really, I think that all they are looking for is evidence that the applicant is truly ready for an on-site audition. OCSA has not posted dates for the 2014-2015 Preview Days yet, so check back again.

      Good luck!

    • Hi Kaila!

First off, good luck today! It’s hard not to be nervous, I know, but try to relax and enjoy it. That’s important. :)

In general, there are less spots for 11th grade than say, for 7th and maybe 9th. The available positions for upper graders vary per conservatory. The good news is, there are most likely fewer people auditioning in the upper grades. The way I look at it is that this kind of evens things out: Fewer spots/fewer people = similar chances of getting accepted in 11th grade or the 7th grade, on a percentage basis.

My advice is just go to your audition, have fun, and do your best! (Just for today, don’t worry about the numbers…) We are rooting for you!

Have you had your audition yet? Neither of my kids have ever auditioned for Culinary Arts so I am not sure about the questions they will ask. According to the audition requirements, the 15 minute interview will revolve around discussing your Round One essay and your “attitude, work ethic, passion, creativity, etc.” but that sounds pretty open ended! Will you do us a favor and post again after your interview and tell us how it went and what others can expect?

  16. Hey, I got a question for CW…after you turn in your portfolio do they still check the semester’s grades? Since it hasn’t finished yet

    Posted by Shela | January 24, 2013, 9:22 pm
    • Hi Shela!

Yes, they will check your grades! You must be ‘academically approved’ before you can move through the process. That means they won’t forward your portfolio on until you’re approved. Are you a current OCSA student? If so, I believe they check your last semester’s grades internally; if you are transferring in, you have to submit your last full semester’s report card along with your application or it’s considered ‘incomplete.’

      Hope that helps!

    • Hi Sarah!

No, I don’t think so. If they feel it is incomplete, you will see that on your Application Status, which you can check on-line using your log-in information. Most likely, they will just want you to bring a photo with you (which you must do anyway) to the audition.

  18. Hi ! I’m a freshman this year and I’m trying out for Creative Writing for my shophomore year.
I was wondering if Creative Writing was one of those competitive classes? How many people are they accepting?
Will they grade harshly on Writing skills in round 1? Are they looking for skillful writers or creative and unique writers? Is it very hard to pass Round 1?

Also, for the culinary video in round 1, does it have to be professionally edited and professionally touched (transitions, effects, ect)?

    Thank You !!!!

    Posted by Euna | January 12, 2013, 2:50 pm
    • Hi Euna,

To answer part two of your questions: Creative Writing also is competitive, but maybe not as much as culinary. I don’t know for sure, but that is my feeling. You will definitely face more competition coming in as a sophomore, just because in general there seem to be fewer spots in 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

I don’t know if they ‘grade’ your Round One portfolio; I think it’s more of a review to ensure you are a worthy candidate. While it needs to be neat, professional and close to error-free, I think they look more for volume, variety, creativity and passion. At this point, I don’t think it’s about technical skill, it’s about content.

To go back to Culinary, NO, they do not expect your video to be professionally done. Actually, I am sure the more natural, realistic and heartfelt the better. Truly, in my experience, at OCSA it’s not about the polish, it’s about the passion. Prove you’ve got it and you’re half way there. Prove you’ve got the talent/skills and your three-quarters of the way there. Then, if they’ve got the space, your in. Many times it comes down to available spots in the end.

      Again, good luck!

  19. Hi im in 9TH GRADE trying out for 10th grade for culinary. Is culinary competitive?
how many are they accepting for the new 10th graders? and are there many aplicants as other competitve conservatories?

    Posted by Euna | January 12, 2013, 2:45 pm
    • Hi Euna!

Yes, Culinary is competitive! All conservatories are. I am not sure how many 10th graders they are accepting but probably only a few. Remember: the conservatory started last year with a majority of 9th graders, who are all moving up to 10th grade next year. They will be filling mostly 9th grade spots for 2013-2014 since the conservatory starts at 9th grade (so no 8th graders are moving up) but most likely will add only a few new students in the upper grades. It’s competitive but not impossible! Good luck to you ;)

how mnay 10th grades would pass for va? is it hard to get in?

    Posted by Sarah | January 4, 2013, 4:59 pm
    • Hi Sarah!

Well I am a wealth of information on this particular subject because we attended Preview Day for VA this past Saturday. I don’t think it is harder to get in; but there are less spots. Ms. Oden said that grades 7th and 9th have the most applicants, and those are the grade levels that have the most spots available. This year, 7th grade is downsizing from one two classes to one so they will be accepting only about 20 new 7th graders. She said she’d have about five spots for 10th graders. I wonder: does that mean the odds even out since fewer people audition for 10th grade? The other advantage for applicants this year is that they have instituted the two-round application process, which means that only the most qualified students advance to the audition process. From what I understood, this has reduced the total number of applications that have been received so far. Bottom line though: it is competitive in all grades and you definitely have to put your best foot forward if you want to earn one of those coveted spots! Ms. Oden provides a list of ‘Tips for a Successful Audition.’ Let me know if you’d like me to email it to you.

      Best of luck to you!

  22. Hello. I want to audition for CW and seeing the questions here, Your daughter got accepted. That’s great! I have some questions for her, if you don’t mind ^.^

    1) Was it hard getting in?

    2) What level of Vocabulary did you use? And does that matter?

    3) Are the classes worth getting into? Or are they just like any other highschool?

    4) Is the CW really a challenge to get in?

    5) What rating do the stories have to be? ( I seemed to write one with a small death scene and it talks about someone killing someone…is that fine?)

    Ok, that’s it, thanks! :)

    Posted by Debra | December 26, 2012, 12:45 pm
    • Hi Debra, Happy New Year!!

As you requested, I went straight to the source; My daughter. Here is what she had to say in response to your questions: I hope this is helpful. Best of luck to you — OCSAmama :)

      1) Was it hard getting in?

      - I can’t really say that it was hard to get into Creative Writing. It did require a lot of preparation of my portfolio and entrance essay, but the audition boils down to your cumulative ability. I think the level of difficulty regarding the audition is different for every Creative Writing hopeful.

      2) What level of Vocabulary did you use? And does that matter?

      - I just used the vocabulary I can comfortably use. Don’t dumb yourself down, but don’t extend yourself into using words incorrectly. Also, one of the worst things you can do is sound like you’ve used a thesaurus for every sentence. Utilize a level of vocabulary that you feel comfortable using. As for whether it matters or not, I assume it does. The conservatory does want people with a certain level of diction to their pieces. It would be hard to believe that the words you place in your writing “wouldn’t matter.” But as I said, use what you feel complements your voice as a writer.

      3) Are the classes worth getting into? Or are they just like any other highschool?

      - I have never attended a public middle or high school. But from my experience, OCSA offers many opportunities that wouldn’t necessarily be offered at just any other school. Amazing guest speakers, strong alum presence, varied teaching styles, and a wide assortment of classes makes me almost positive that the program is superior to others offered in traditional public high schools.

      4) Is the CW really a challenge to get in?

      - I don’t quite understand the wording of this question, but if you’re inquiring about the difficulty of the audition, see the answer to number 1.

      5) What rating do the stories have to be? ( I seemed to write one with a small death scene and it talks about someone killing someone…is that fine?)

      - There is no rating system to writing. OCSA Creative Writing staff do not uphold a policy of censorship. In class, students are not required to limit themselves or their content. Your death scene should be fine. Just make sure it is tasteful and assists your story in it’s progression, not just used for shock value. That’s my main advice.

I was also wondering since she got in and all…if I can send her my story samples for feedback and how to improve. She could create a new e-mail for privacy but I really want to get in and want to talk to her about it, thanks~

      - If you have any other questions regarding your audition process, I would be happy to aid you in getting them answered so that you can be successful. Unfortunately, OCSAMama receives much traffic from incoming kids interested in auditioning. If I were to offer my critique to only you, it would be quite an unfair advantage. This means I would need to offer it to anyone who asks. I don’t think I can commit to that, and I’m sure the Creative Writing staff would much rather see your raw writing, unfiltered by a current student. If you have a teacher or writing mentor that you are close enough with, you might try asking them to proofread and offer feedback. Or you could try reading your pieces aloud, as that really helps in finding awkward sentence structures and typos. But at this point in time I don’t feel comfortable personally offering that sort of assistance. Sorry!

    • Hi Matty!

You will not have advance notice of creative writing prompts…you will get the prompt at audition-time. The first step is submitting your portfolio according to the audition requirements. If you pass through to round two, you will be invited to attend an audition. At the audition, which takes place in a group setting, you will be given a prompt and asked to write. You will have about 45 minutes to complete your writing and then will turn it in. This writing sample will be used to determine your eligibility to join the CW conservatory. To keep if fair, everybody learns the prompt at the same time!

      I hope this helps! ;)

And will there be registration available at preview day? Like if you go can you register for an audition there? I’m going on Jan 5th and Im stuck and dunno where and what to do.

    • Hi Polly!

Did you RSVP for the Preview Day? If so, you will be emailed a schedule for the day’s events. Basically there are three sessions you can attend: 2 conservatory preview sessions and one OCSA overview session. It will make sense once you get your schedule but basically these all occur at the same time during the three, roughly hour-long blocks and you attend those of your choice.

About registration: No, you cannot register for an audition at the Preview Day. The audition process comes later: Once you have completed the on-line registration/hard copy registration (which you can do now but I’d suggest waiting until after Preview Day because you’ll most likely gain some valuable insight that will help you put your best foot forward) you will be notified about scheduling your audition, if you’ve qualified.

Don’t worry! As long as you’ve RSVP’d, you will be in the loop and OCSA will provide all the information you need as the Preview Day date approaches…

      Good luck!!

          • Hi Polly ~

Go to Symphony Hall at your assigned time. The other two blocks that follow (about 30-45 minutes each) you can pick the conservatory of your choice and attend the preview session. By the end of the day (about 3 hours), you will have attended the overview, and up to two conservatory sessions. Truthfully, I don’t really think it matters what order you go through the three sessions. Each session is held during each of the three blocks…so you will never miss anything.

            Hope this clarifies ;)

Yup….take it to the school and drop it off with the receptionist in the main lobby. Make sure it’s labeled well and it will be delivered. The school is closed now for the holidays but it will reopen on January 3rd I believe. You could mail it too but if you do, make a copy just to be on the safe side. ;)

  26. I have a few questions about the VA conservatory. For the 2013-2014 auditions its going to be a two round process unlike the previous years. Why? Also, In the round two audition where you complete the drawing excercises on campus, can you use the same work you turned in for the first round in your portfolio? And what do have to draw for the Directors? Thanks so much! -Julie :)

    • Hi Julie~

Eeeek, really? I actually wasn’t aware of that….yet! This will affect us too because my daughter is planning to audition for the VA Conservatory. (I haven’t downloaded the application yet; I guess I need to do that!) While I don’t have any inside scoop, I will tell you what I think is going on. As the number of applicants continues to go up, up, up….OCSA is most likely attempting to refine the process and make it as efficient and fair as possible. By having a qualifying round, the applicants that actually get to participate in the audition process are literally ‘pre-qualified’ and I am sure this is a big benefit for the directors. It ensures that they are only seeing the most qualified potential students. This is how the Creative Writing Conservatory applications/auditions have been managed for the years I have been involved with OCSA and it seems to work.

Using the CW example, once you advance to the second round, students never go back to discussing their portfolio; they move on the the writing portion of the audition. My guess would be that the VA audition would be similar but if not, I would venture to say that you could use the same work….that’ is their portfolio after all!

As for what they are asked to draw during the audition, I’ve heard about years where it’s been their hand and years where it has been something in room. It varies I believe but will probably be along those lines.

I hope this helps!! Good luck.

  27. Sorry for the bother, but I have yet another question :) If you are planning on getting a Letter of Recomendation…Does it HAVE to be for CW? Or could it also be of ELA,Math,Science ETC. And is there a limit of how many you can fill out? Thanks, I can’t get one for CW because, I don’t go to classes( they’re hard to find and I can’t find one anywhere) so I was just wondering ^^ thanks!

    • Hi Cristal~

No bother! The letters of recommendation form that OCSA provides is kind of geared toward your art…and is worded in such a way that it relate to your skills and talent in your area of interest. I’m sure it could adapted in such a way that a more general recommendation could be given. In fact, I don’t know that you have to use OCSA’s form; but be sure to read it and follow the instructions for submitting letters of recommendation. You can submit as many as you want!

  29. Hello, I have a question about the 2013-2014 school year… Where can I exactly get the application to enroll? And what kind of portfolio do you recommend? Is there a special way to organize it which will increase my chances of acceptence? I am planning on auditioning for Creative writing. Thanks

    Posted by Cristal | December 6, 2012, 6:07 pm
    • Hi Cristal ~

You get the application when you go on-line and click on the Apply Now Online link. There are step-by-step instructions for getting started and once you complete the application process, you will be able to download the application and current audition requirements. Now is the time to do this because the application acceptance period is underway and auditions are being scheduled.

When you are online, register to attend the final Preview Day on January 5th. You can sit through the Creative Writing Conservatory session and you will learn everything you need to know about how to organize your portfolio. And if you have specific questions, you can ask them and get personalized direct answers. There are guidelines for the way the director likes to receive portfolios and they will cover that during the preview session. You will also find that information in the Audition Requirements once you download it.

Good luck to you! Once you have all of your information gathered, please feel free to ask additional questions if you have any. My daughter is in the Creative Writing Conservatory so we have some successful experience with the portfolio/audition process. :)

And was the audition hard to pass? Thanks.

        Posted by Cristal | December 7, 2012, 10:28 pm
        • Hi Cristal!

During the CW audition, there is no interview. Your portfolio is the first requirement. It will be reviewed and if you pass through this first round, you will be able to advance to the audition stage. The CW audition is a group audition and you will all be given the same prompt and will be asked to write a few paragraphs. You’ll have 30-45 minutes to write…

I don’t feel as though my daughter thought of it has hard but she did put a lot of time and effort into her portfolio and was little anxious about the writing portion of the audition since she had to write long-hand and it was timed. But she got through it and got in…hopefully you will too!

  30. My mom wants me to include samples of my fiber arts and a demonstration of my juggling in my 9th grade IA audition. I am skeptical that they will help my chances, and if anything, I think it may hurt them, since neither are listed on the IA auditon page as art forms that can be included. What should I do?

    Posted by Kk | November 19, 2012, 5:46 pm
    • Hi Kk!

Hummm, that’s a tough one. I know your mom wants you to show off ALL of your talents (she’s probably very proud of you…) but I kind of think maybe you are right about paying close attention to what’s relevant to OCSA and appropriate for the audition. Your Fiber Arts may have a place in your portfolio as long as you also are including other examples that are specifically called for in the audition requirements (visual and performance arts, photography, creative writing, etc.).

Juggling is fun though and could be used as an ice-breaker in your audition and may provide an opportunity for your personality to shine though…Come in juggling and let Ms. Stafford know that you have so many artistic talents you have to find time to ‘juggle’ them all — haahahhaa…get it? Corny I know, but hopefully you get the point. In the end, YOU have to be comfortable and confident so please think it through and follow your instincts. ♥

      Good luck!!!

  31. hello…I was wondering how you put together your application and portfolio for the IA auditions?

    Posted by cookiedough | October 30, 2012, 10:30 pm
    • Hello…cookiedough!

With both kids, we put together a ‘portfolio’ that was basically a binder with tabs; each tab showcased an area of interest. Then they created a cover and used sheet protectors to make it look nice and professional. We had things like creative writing, drawing, acting, etc. and used pictures where necessary to convey their experience. My daughter relied solely on her portfolio and the interview; my son took his portfolio along with his guitar, which he played first. After, he had his interview and time to show his book to Ms. Stafford. If you have visual art samples, you can opt to photograph them and put them in the portfolio too if it’s too hard to physically take them to the audition.

I hope this helps. And, sorry for the delayed reply. OCSAmama has been MOVERmama! We’ve come to Orange from south County and now we are just a few minutes from OCSA. It’s wonderful!

      Good luck with your portfolio!

I was told by a little birdie that aprox 160 kids were wait listed for the 12 conservatories total and one teacher/ conservatory wait listed that same Amt for just 1 conservatory. Kinda funny so total wait listed 320.

  34. Now I’m curious as to how many we’re briskly accepted. Will we ever know?

    Posted by Christy b | August 7, 2012, 4:28 pm
    • Hi Christy!

Well, let’s see: I think we can speculate using what we know. My guess? About 400. Here’s how I arrived at that figure. Last year, OCSA counted its student population at 1,750. This year, they are making reference to “serving 1,850 students in grades 7-12.” So, that is an increase of 100 plus they’ve had to replace last year’s graduating class that was around 300 most likely. (300 + 100 = 400) :)

The year prior, they went from 1,550 students to 1,750 (plus a whole new class to replace the seniors) so the total number of new accepted students was about 600. Dr. Opacic did say at the beginning of this audition/registration cycle that the growth for the 2012-2013 school year would not be as great as it had been for the previous year. So yup, that’s my best guess!

  35. Hi, I heard that very few kids were accepted into 9th grade this year. Is that true and, if so, do you know why?
    Thank you.

    Posted by Cindy | August 7, 2012, 1:59 pm
    • Hi Cindy ~

I hadn’t heard that but I can speculate as to why that might be the case: Because there is a full 8th grade class that moves up each year, the number of 9th grade openings is contingent upon students leaving/opting not to return to OCSA. If they had high retention this year, it stands to reason that the openings would be few. On the other hand, some conservatories don’t open up until 9th grade and need to be filled. However, cross conservatory transfers (current students auditioning for new conservatories) may get priority, filling up those available spots and leaving fewer for new students. I hope that sorta helps. :)

      • Yes. Thank you so much. My grand-daughter is wait listed for 9th grade and she jumps every time the phone rings! A friend of hers who is at the school told her that only a few 9th graders were accepted, Do you know when the 8th graders have to confirm that they are returning – will that be next week during registration? If they don’t register next week will their spots be offered to wait listed/transfer kids then, or does the school need to wait until school actually starts and they don’t show up?!

        Posted by Cindy | August 7, 2012, 9:05 pm
        • Hi Cindy ~

OCSA states that, “Selection from the wait list usually takes place August through September and then again in early January as availability warrants. If you have not been contacted by January 7, 2013, please consider reapplying to OCHSA for the following school year.” — So I guess it’s understandable that your grand-daughter in on pins and needles ;) The call could come in at any time now!

To answer your question, returning 8th grader have to submit their parent funding agreement for the following school year, which commits them financially, in the spring of the prior school year. This is a requirement and if it’s not completed by the deadline, their spot is opened up to new students. Some who commit may have a change of plans over the summer so there might be a few additional openings. Because there are incremental commitments and financial obligations all along the way, the registration process is not passive and I think OCSA has a good idea of who is committed by the time on-campus registration rolls around. I don’t know for sure, but I imagine that the school makes every effort to fill any open spots as soon as they become aware of them instead of waiting for school to start. This is better for everybody.

Good luck to you and your grand-daughter. I know the waiting must be excruciating. Please let us know if you get the “she’s in” call…we are rooting for her!

    • Hi again Cindy ~

It just occurred to me as I was posting another reply (see it above) that an additional reason for fewer 9th graders being accepted this year was due to less growth overall. Last year the school was attempting to expand and added about 600 new students; this year, growth was minimal and I believe about 400 new students will join OCSA for the 2012-2013 school year.

    • Hey David, how HOW did I miss this important question??
      Please forgive me!

Let me respond now, in the hopes that it is not too late. I have a few important words for you, that come directly from OCHSA: Ready?

“No student is admitted or denied based on financial capacity.”

The thing to know is that the state provides no funding for conservatory; it is run solely by contributions from parents and fundraising. And conservatory is what makes OCHSA special. So it must be considered a priority. With that said, even if you can’t afford to fully fund your conservatory, or contribute to all all of the financial requests, figure out what you can afford and pay that.

If you still have questions or concerns, speak to Becky Parsons, Family Liaison, at OCHSA. She can help you.

Good luck David ~ Hope to see you in August at OCHSA.

  37. My daughter is applying to OCHSA for the 2013-14 school year. She would like to audition for the Musical Theater and the Integrated Arts Conservatories. For the Integrated Arts Conservatory, she’s thinking of singing her original song while playing the piano and doing a monologue. Is that good enough for an audition?

    Posted by Nikki | May 31, 2012, 11:34 am
    • Hi Nikki!

Yes, that is very appropriate for the IA audition! Sounds perfect. :) The requirement is to showcase at least three aspects of their arts interest and she’ll have that covered. My only advice would be to make sure she is well prepared for her interview. Oftentimes, Ms. Stafford only needs a very short amount of time to discern the level of talent and will ask to end before the song, piece or monologue is finished. DON’T LET THIS SHAKE HER. She has said this doesn’t mean the performance was bad; but that she’s been doing this long enough she can ascertain what she needs to know quickly.

Once the performance concludes, there will be an interview. I would say this portion is equal in importance to the performance in terms of passing muster. I’ve heard Ms. Stafford say that she has been very impressed by a performance but underwhelmed by personality and it has cost a candidate an acceptance. She is looking for passion for the arts, the ability to articulate why they want to attend OCHSA and a nice appearance ~ she hates flip-flops!

      Hope this helps!

      Good luck ;)

  38. My daughter has auditioned for two conservatories: CW and CV. She received notice that she was accepted for CW.

My daughter really wanted to be in CV, so I was wondering that because nothing was sent about CV, that means she absolutely did not get accepted?

And, if perhaps they have an empty slot but because I already confirmed my daughter into CW, would they overlook my daughter and go to the next person so that he or she can get to go to OCHSA?

    Posted by Cynthia | May 30, 2012, 4:21 pm
    • Hi Cynthia ~

Okay, here is the deal. When you audition for OCHSA (up to 2 conservatories) you will either be approved, not approved or wait-listed. If you are approved, or accepted, into one conservatory this means you were not accepted or wait-listed for another…if you auditioned for more than one. It is possible to be accepted into two conservatories. In that case, you have a choice. I have never heard of anyone being wait-listed for more than one conservatory, but I guess that might be possible.

If you have confirmed your enrollment into CW, your in! Congratulations. If they have any empty spaces in CV, those would be offered to those who where not accepted, but wait-listed for that conservatory.

But remember, she can audition again late this year/early next year for a “cross conservatory transfer” (for the 2013-2014 school year) if she decides she really wants to be in CW.

By the way, we were in the same boat; my son auditioned for two conservatories and was accepted into one only, with no mention of the other. It is a little odd and does tend to leave us wondering, what the heck?

I hope this helps you make sense of it all ;)

Hope you and your daughter enjoy OCHSA next year!

Hummm, good question: I don’t have first-hand experience but this is what I’ve heard: doing outside dance lessons when you are in an OCHSA dance conservatory is….challenging. My understanding is that it is very time consuming and you are on campus dancing until 5 (and often after). I think it is possible however for those who are flexible, motivated and tireless! My advice would be to email the director of the dance conservatory and get his take. He could give you an honest and realistic assessment of the time commitments that will be required and how other dancers have balanced the two.

      Good luck!

  40. Are the students involved in the commercial dance program really good? Like do they do the stuff on dance moms and are they really flexible and talented? I can dance and I know technique and stuff but I definatly not that good because I am a beginner. Does OCHSA accepted dancers who aren’t the best?

    Posted by Sugar | May 6, 2012, 3:38 pm
    • Hi Sugar :)

Yes, the commercial dancers are really good. I think the audition is a little less specific (stringent) than Classical Dance but you are expected to demonstrate ‘ability’ in jazz, tap and ballet so it is necessary to be proficient before you audition. However, you don’t have to be a master…otherwise, you wouldn’t need OCHSA! I’m sure the expectation varies by grade level but you have to have core skills, and be able to follow the choreography/catch on quickly. Have you reviewed the audition requirements? If you are planning to audition for the 2013-2104 school year, you still have about 6 months to prepare.

I haven’t really watched Dance Moms too much but my answer to that question (from what I’ve seen) is NO! Here’s a tip for you: Go to YouTube and search OCHSA commerical dances and I bet you will find a bunch of videos of OCHSA dancer which will give you some more insight ;)

Good Luck. I hope this helps.

    Posted by cookiedough | April 24, 2012, 5:36 pm
    • Hello again!

Hummm…tricky question. The answer is no, and yes. Technically, you don’t gain any favor by enrolling in a community arts program class. But, as I explain in Preparing For Your Audition, I think taking one of these classes is beneficial and may help you hone your craft and thus be better prepared for your audition. And, in our experience, the classes have been taught by OCHSA directors and/or teachers, which allows you to get to know them; and more importantly — them to get to know you. Plus, you can potentially gain some insight into the various programs and what the directors are like, their preferences, expectations, etc. — which again may prove to be an advantage at audition time. All of this would definitely prepare you, which in turn WOULD increase your chances of getting accepted.

Does that help? I hope so!! ;)

  45. what do the kids do at the integrated arts audition? Do you interview with the director then after you talk you get up to audition for her, or do you interview with the director, leave, and then go back in for the audition.

    Posted by cookiedough | April 12, 2012, 1:17 pm
    • Hi Cookiedough ;)

Well, that depends on the kid! It’s based on where his/her interest lies and what they will be presenting. In our experience though, the audition is with the director (Ms. Stafford) and after hellos the student will go directly into their presentation or performance. Ms. Stafford controls the timing and flow in order to ascertain what she needs to know. She has said that she can usually tell after the first few notes, bars or pages the depth of a prospective student’s talent. Again in our experience this process includes a dialogue in which Ms. Stafford asks questions about what’s being presented, artistic interests, etc. that is very much based on the individual standing before her. She’s always been super friendly but the audition/interview is brief — just about 10 minutes!

      I hope this helps!

  46. Hi, OCHSAmama – Thanks for your blog. I has helped us get through the last few months and understand the process so much better. My son was accepted to the IM/Wind Ensemble conservatory for next year. It was his first choice and he is very excited. I was wondering what you, or any of your readers, know about the program.

For example, he doesn’t own his instrument right now – it is provided by his middle school. Do you think we are going to need to purchase (or rent) one for him to use. Will he need to bring it back and forth each day (it’s kind of large and he’ll be taking the train).

I know we’ll probably be able to get a lot of answers from the director of the program, but wanted to put it out here, too, just to see what anyone else knows about the program.

Congrats to you and your kids, too!

I can’t say for sure but I believe he will need to own (or rent) his own instrument. The good news is, he won’t have to bring it back and forth every day. IM students get lockers that they can store their instruments in. Thank goodness! Our first year we had a cellist in our carpool…

  48. Hi, Does anyone know how many kids get waitlisted or proportionately how many compared to how many are accepted. I’m just trying to get a feel for how hopeful we should be! My daughter is devastated and if the situation is pretty hopeless I want to be prepared for that,

    Posted by lanarkmom | April 4, 2012, 7:09 am
    • I don’t know that. I don’t believe that information is published anywhere and I am sure it is kind of guarded. You could email Allison Hackney at the admissions office and ask her, but I bet she will give you their ‘stock’ response, which is:

“OCHSA does not have a traditional “numbered” wait list. In selecting applicants from the list, we first determine grade level, then Conservatory availability. Selection from the wait list usually takes place in August through September and then again prior to the start of second semester.”

I feel your pain…it’s frustrating not knowing.

  50. Congratulations! That means you impressed the director and were qualified but space was an issue. I can’t make an predictions but I will say that there is a wait list for a reason. Some people on the wait list do get in….I hope are one of them. The unfortunate part is… you are left to wait. The agony continues…

  51. Hello everybody!

What a day, huh? Thank you so much for sharing it with me! You can read my new post to find out how we fared.
Wow, waiting to read that email was really hard. That darn thing sat there all day and it was killing me! My husband begged my to forward it…but I couldn’t do it. I promised my son I’d let him read it first. Not sure I’m loving the email thing….

Let me say to all those who were wait-listed…we’re right there with you! Not sure how that’s going to pan out but as always, I wish you the best.

For those who didn’t make it in this year…. What can I say? Nothing that is going to make you feel any better. But remember, there are lots of successful, fulfilled, accomplished and amazing artists out there. And guess what? Most of them didn’t go to OCHSA. Don’t let today stand in your way. You’ve got things to do and places to be, I know it.

Finally, congratulations to all those who were on the receiving end of one of those coveted “Congratulations!” emails. It’s a great feeling. Be proud and enjoy it. There is a lot of fun, weirdness (hey, it’s OCHSA!) and work ahead. Please take this opportunity seriously and make the most of it. You are part of a very small group and you have earned a spot that many desired. Be grateful and work hard!

No matter what your outcome today, you are brave for putting yourselves out there and are to congratulated.

With love and a shoulder if you need it — OCHSAmama

    • My son auditioned for 2 conserv. and was put on the wait-list for one. What about the other one? Does it it mean he wasn’t accepted to the other one? Is it possible to be be accepted to one and wait-listed to the other? Or should I assume he wasn’t accepted to the other? Shouldn’t they let us know either way if he wasn’t accepted to the other conservatory? On the letter we received, it only mentioned one of the two he applied for. If anyone has gone through this, please let me know what your opinion is.-J

      • Hi Julia!

Unfortunately, I would assume he was not accepted to the other conservatory. My son auditioned for two conservatories as well. He was accepted into one, and not the other. The letter we received does not reference the other conservatory…and I don’t think you would be accepted to one and wait-listed to another. Keep your fingers crossed that they will find a spot for him!

        • Thank you for your response. Have you heard or is it possible that they could inform the wait-listed people if space is available “before” August/September? For example, if someone accepts another conservatory? It would be especially helpful if we know before the meetings that are coming up. Once again thak you for your response.-Julia :)

          • Your welcome! I haven’t heard that, but I think it’s possible. The date to commit to a conservatory is April 13th so around that time, directors are probably starting to get a good idea of their numbers. What they might not know until closer to June is the number of current students that are not be planning to return. I think August/September is at the far end of the time frame and I would image that OCHSA would like to have things buttoned up in terms of enrollment numbers before that. That is my guess.

  53. Hello, I got waitlisted for Visual Arts for 10th grade. Even though there is not much room for my grade, is there still a good chance that I’ll be called upon to admit?

    Posted by dragondaisy | April 2, 2012, 2:26 pm
    • I can’t honestly say. There is a chance, but I don’t know the odds. It is more difficult for the higher grades because they have fewer spots to fill. My daughter will be in 10th grade too and she was placed on the wait list. She seems pretty optimistic she’ll eventually get in. I hope you both do!

  54. Hi. My child just got wait listed so we are pretty upset at the moment. I read your post here about wait listing and it made sense that they won’t know for sure until they get all the responses by 13th. BUT! The email we got said that they make wait list decisions in August/September. If they know that they have some space opened up by the 13th why would they not move to the wait list then? Do we really have to wait until August?

    • Hi Marianne….sorry to hear you were wait listed! But keep the faith. I know of people who were placed on the wait list and were called. It happens. I don’t totally understand how they move through the process but I think they provide the big picture in terms of a time frame because most likely, they want to maintain flexibility right up until the start of the school year. My daughter was wait listed too… I guess we’ll have to just ‘wait’ and see. Darn.

    Posted by gobama14 | April 1, 2012, 10:39 pm
    • Oh yes, the recommendations… I believe in them, and I think they are important in positioning you as serious, professional, and accomplished. But do they help you gain admission? Honestly, I think your acceptance hinges on your AUDITION. Did you do enough? Did you impress the director? Letters of recommendation are optional remember which means that not having one won’t prevent you from getting in…just as having a great one (or more) won’t get you in without also having a great audition.

  60. Hi OCHSAMAMA,
My name is Griffin. I’m 14 years old, and I applied for FTV 2012-2013 9th Grade. I am literally crawling out of my skin. I am so stressed that I would be happier knowing that I didn’t get in that I am right now, not knowing anything. How are you feeling about tomorrow? When will the letters go out? I am almost hyperventilating. I got 2 recommendations (one from the form in the audition instructions, and one over-the-phone recommendation from my principal). Will those two recommendations increase my chances of admission? By how much? I need a fellow soon-to-be-OCHSA-goer to talk to.
    Sincerely,

I have to confess I checked the mail box on Saturday (I thought just maybe the letter would come first, followed by the email Monday or Tuesday) and have been peeking at my inbox all day.

Here’s what I am going to do…go to bed soon, then check again first thing in the morning and then every five minutes after that! Bottom line: You will get your answer soon and the agony of this suspense will be history. Until, just breathe……

  63. Hey can you go more into depth about the wait list.

    Posted by David R. | March 28, 2012, 3:28 pm
    • Hi David!

Well, I don’t know how in depth I can go….I haven’t had any personal experience with the wait list, and I hope I am not about to get schooled in that subject – lol! But here is my understanding: the individual conservatories admit more students that they are prepared to accept. This is due to some kids getting accepted to multiple conservatories and others who for one reason or another audition but don’t end up attending. Once acceptance notifications go out, there is a time frame (by April 13th this year) in which you must confirm your intent to attend, and which conservatory you will join. At that point, the directors go about finalizing their numbers and if they are short, they go to their ‘wait list’ and start contacting people. I know a few people who were wait listed and got in. What I don’t know is the order the wait list is formed. I can only speculate here, but I would venture to say it is either by suitability or audition order. The world may never know! This is how OCHSA explains it:

“OCHSA does not have a traditional “numbered” wait list. In selecting applicants from the wait list, we first determine grade level, then Conservatory availability. Selection from the wait list usually takes place August through September and then again in early January as availability warrants. If you have not been contacted by January 7, 2013, please consider reapplying to OCHSA for the following school year.”

      Good luck to you!

        • Hi David!

I don’t know…though I wish I did. I am waiting for two letters: one for my new student/son and another for my existing student/daughter who auditioned to transfer to a new conservatory. If they were all going out on the same day, I’d guess they’d go out in the middle of the night and that we’d wake up and find then in our in-boxes. But according to the calendar, the emails are being sent April 2-3rd. Does that mean around midnight on the Monday the 2nd? Does that mean they will go out in two batches? How will they determine whose go when?

I’d better stop: I think I’ve asked way more questions that I’ve been able to answer. Sorry :(

I’m just going to keep checking…waiting for “OCHSA Admissions” to appear in my in-box. At some point, I know it will.

    • Hi Christy!

I just went back and checked and last year I did get an email on the 6th of April telling me that letters had been mailed April 1st; and that “Applicants who are accepted for the 2011-2012 school year must accept admission to OCHSA via on online acceptance by April 15ht, 2011. This link is contained in the letter.”

Further, the email explained “That due to a system limitation, we are unable to send follow up emails which contain acceptance information as previously promised. We apologize for this situation.”

But, I just looked at the calendar and you’re right. It says that emails will be sent on April 2 and 3rd. So I guess it’s true…this is going to be the year we get notified via email. They must have gotten the bugs worked out. Last year it sounded like the intention was to have the email serve as a “follow up.” But it sure sounds to me like the plan this year is to start sending emails on the first business day in April. I wonder if they will send letters at all? I guess we’ll find out very soon…it’s less than four weeks away. I’m nervous! I’ll be glad to know either way but I am really hoping for good news. I guess we all are.

Anyway, this is great news for you…problem solved!

    Posted by ChristyB | March 7, 2012, 9:41 pm
    • Yes…that’s a hard one. Can you keep a secret? You could probably request to receive an email since you will be out of town, then let him open the letter when you get home. Or, you could tell him, celebrate!! and then just keep the letter as a keepsake ;) In fact, I think I remember someone being in that boat last year and they were able to make arrangements so they didn’t miss the acceptance confirmation deadline.

  68. Hi! i just recently auditioned for Commercial Voice and I was wondering if there are any ways to tell from the faces of the “judges” (or whatever you would call them) that would be signs that you did well or not. After I finished singing my first song, one of the guys said, “Nice. Very good!” He looked at the other two, nodded and then said, “I think we are all on the same page.” and smiled. They kept complimenting my guitar (I was accompanying myself) and we had a little convo about how I learned guitar, and how long I had been singing, and one guy was being very friendly and telling me about how he taught himself guitar by YouTube videos and told me to check them out. At the end, there was a small belting exercise to see how much push I had. When I finished, one of them looked at the other two and said, “She has push. She has ALOT of push!” As I was leaving, I asked when I would find out if I was accepted or not, and they said from mid to late March, but on their website it says first week of April. I was just wondering if there really is a chance that I would find out that early. I have been anxiously awaiting their reply! Thankyou!

    • Hi Robyn!

Well, I’m not sure about reading the judges faces but in our experience the positive feedback has always been a good sign :) It sounds like you impressed them! In general, the judges always seem to be very friendly and supportive. It’s hard I know, because you want to believe that their friendliness is a sign that you’ve made it in; but in truth, you won’t know until the first week of April. That is when the letters go out. In fact, the judges don’t have to make final decisions until the end of next week; so I am not even positive that they know who will get in and who won’t until then. My gut feeling? I think there are certain kids who judges know immediately whether they are in or out and I have a vision of their application going into either the Yes or No pile. I suspect it’s that “Maybe” pile that gets sorted out at the end. I hope yours is sitting in the Yes pile… You will know for sure in just about a month from now.

      Good luck!

Also, I forgot to ask, do you know how many people apply for Commercial Music specifically and how many they accept inside that conservatory. I auditioned for 9th grade, by the way. :)

        • HI Robyn!

I have never heard of a ‘no’ letter going out. To my knowledge, everybody is notified at the same time — which is around the first week of April. As for specifics regarding Commercial Music, I am not sure…and the same goes for how many will be accepted. I have tried to find out those kinds of answers myself for various conservatories but have never really been able to get a precise answer. I think there are a lot of variables that play into that and I’ve haven’t been able to get a handle on just how the anticipated number of openings in a given year are spread among the 12 conservatories. I am not sure if you’ll get a good answer, but you could email the conservatory director and ask her. If anyone knows, it would be her.

Well, I don’t know for certain, but I do know that is what they said last year too, but then we got a letter. (My daughter auditioned for a new conservatory, which is known as a “cross conservatory transfer.”) I was really glad because I was worried it would be very anti-climatic to get notified via email; plus I wanted my daughter to be the first know and that would be hard to do with an email. Truthfully, I don’t even remember if we ended up getting an email at all or it was just the letter! Anyway…my gut feeling is that letters will go out. I guess we shall see soon. ;)

    • Hi Kelsey!

These are not ‘required’ but I would say YES, you need a letter of recommendation. OCHSA provides the form, making the process really easy. Since you are taking dance classes, you could ask one of your teachers to fill out the form for you. My view is that if you are serious about getting accepted, you want to do everything you can to make a good impression. A recommendation letter is an important part of that.

      Good luck!

    • Hi Kelsey!

So are you auditioning soon, or are you considering auditioning? I think you sound exactly like someone who should go for it! You love to dance, right? That’s what OCHSA is all about. Here’s my advice: If your audition is scheduled, go and give it your best effort. The audition requirements do indicate that ballet and tap will be part of the process. Be open minded and understand without that specific experience, you may feel challenged. But pay close attention and use the experience to your advantage by learning what it is they want you to know. That way, if you don’t get accepted into Commercial Dance after your first audition, you can keep training and take some ballet and tap classes so you will be really prepared the next time.

If your audition is not scheduled and you’re thinking about auditioning for 2013-2014, then you have nearly a full year to train and keep getting better. Take some tap and ballet classes in addition to your jazz classes, that way you can go into your audition totally confident.

      Good luck!

I don’t know….but I would venture to say that using the form provided, and maybe adding extra pages if more space is needed, would be a good approach. Also, notice that there are specific instructions about placing the form in a sealed envelope and having it signed by the person who completes it; and then hand delivering it at audition time. I would definitely adhere to these instructions whatever you decide to do.

Does that help? I hope so. ;)

    • Hi David!

Are you auditioning soon? I wish I knew how they scored the audition performance and how it’s determined who gets accepted and who doesn’t. I think I could sell that information and get rich – lol! So no, I don’t know that but I can tell you that my son auditioned just last night so he’s been through the process and at last we know what goes on during the guitar audition. Now if we just didn’t have to wait until April to know if it was enough to sufficiently impress the director and earn him a spot for next year!

            • I did check out Andy Mckee! Very cool. It’s amazing what he does with his guitar. It’s like one-man band. Great choice, I bet you really impressed the judges. I don’t know how the judges score, but I do have it on good authority that appearance counts and of course, it’s all about your skills including not just how well you play, but your knowledge of major scales and sight reading. I am not sure, but I think only the judges are privy to the system of scoring. Ultimately, it comes down to the discretion of just one person, and whether or not he was sufficiently impressed. You’ll know soon enough. Letters should arrive the first week of April.

              As always ~ Good luck!

  75. Thanks for this site! There is a lot of great information on this site. My eight grader has applied and will audition for Winds and Intergrative Arts in the next two weeks. She also excels in Math, can you reccomnd how to get more information on honor and AP classes in Math and Science?

Posted by Thom Griffith | February 11, 2012, 10:08 pm
    • Thanks! I am glad you like the site and that it was helpful. As far as more information about math and science Honors and AP courses, I think the best I can do is refer you to that area of the OCHSA web site. My daughter is a 9th grader and is in Lit and Comp honors and plans to take Lit and Comp Honors II next year as well as AP World History/US history but no math and science Honors or AP courses.

I do know that the requirements include an A or B grade in the prerequisite course plus a “serious academic attitude” and a “high degree of self-discipline and self-motivation.”

You can view the Curriculum Handbook here. It includes all of the AP and Honors courses that are offered along with a description of the class and specific prerequisites.

      I hope this helps.

I wish you and your daughter the best of luck with her upcoming auditions!

    • Hi ChristyB!

Thanks for asking. Your timing was perfect. I went to the mandatory Parent Funding Meeting yesterday (which is an annual requirement and you will be required to attend too once you get accepted and before your son can register) and during the overview, Steve Wagner, OCHSA’s COO and VP of Business, gave us an overview of this year’s application numbers and expected enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year.

Last year, the school received a record number of applications….and guess what? This year that record was broken.

So far, just a few days before the official application deadline, nearly 4,000 applications have been received. For next year, they will be adding fewer students than last year and the school expects to enroll about 400 total. Mr. Wagner said this will replace seniors, populate the new Culinary Arts Conservatory, and increase general enrollment by about 200. Last year, 600 students were added.

Considering those stats: He estimated that the chances of getting accepted this year stand at about 1 in 10.

I don’t know specific numbers per grade, but I would assume that 9th and 7th are likely to add the most spots.

Mr. Wagner joked that for those of attending the meeting, the good news was that our kids were already in. Which is true in part. What he doesn’t know is that some of us (like me!) have new prospective students who are auditioning this year and facing stiff competition. My son has two auditions next week, and I came home with news: He better step up his game! This is not going to be slam dunk.

I hope this helps you. I wish it sounded more encouraging! You have to stay focused on the fact that 400 kids will get an acceptance letter, and your son is in the running. He could be one of them.

I wish you all the best and soothing thoughts all the way through that first weekend in April when you will know for sure.

      Good luck!

      • Holy cow that’s insane. I cannot believe they’re taking 200 less than the prior year especially since adding Culinary arts. Thats incredible! I wish your youngest luck, I am sure he will do great. What conservatories is he auditioning for?

        Posted by ChristyB | February 11, 2012, 2:47 pm
        • Thank you! He is auditioning for Instrumental Music/Guitar and Integrated Arts. Both auditions are next week.

          Nerve-wracking isn’t it?

I hope you will stay in touch, and let me how he does.

          Again, good luck!

          • Your very welcome! How fun, I have a former swimmer that is currently a senior who is graduating from Music/Guitar. He has loved it.

Yes it definitely is. His auditions were 2 weeks ago, First MT which went really well and the teacher gave awesome feedback. My son was excited and then last week was PD. So now we wait and wait and wait lol

It would be such a wonderful opportunity, but what ever is meant to be will be and he has a great career thus far in his normal LA acting, so what ever happens its all good. He just really wants to attend :)

  77. Hi there,

Do you know anything about audition scheduling? Once approved, the conservatory provides dates that are only one week out. We were hoping for an audition date a few weeks out to fully have all ducks, letters of rec, etc in a row and be fully prepared. Do they continue to add additional audition dates? Thanks so much.

    Posted by Laura | January 20, 2012, 11:33 am
    • Hi Laura!

I know a little about audition scheduling from past personal experience but I must tell you, right now, I am in the exact same boat you are! My son is approved too and I followed the link to see what dates were available, and you are right: They were all a week or less out. Like you, we can’t be ready that quickly. He’s still got a little work to do and we were hoping to schedule his audition for late in February or in early March.

I know another family that had the same experience and they kind of panicked and took one of the time slots offered, thinking it was there only choice, and then had to hustle to get ready.

I know OCHSA states that auditions will continue through mid March so I am going to take a chance and hold off reserving our space for now. My feeling is that they will release new day/time slots as spaces fill up. In fact, in Audition Scheduling FAQ, they address the issue:

I already scheduled an audition, but a new date/time is now available that I like better, can I just re-select the new date on-line?
No. Please do NOT re-select a new audition date once an audition has been scheduled. Should multiple auditions be scheduled for the same program for the same applicant, ALL auditions for the applicant for that program will be canceled without notice.

This leads me to believe that they will continue to release new days and times as existing ones fill up. But as you just read, you CANNOT re-select or make any changes once you’ve committed. So I am going to hold off committing for now in hopes of securing a better future time slot.

It looks like they have only released January dates so my guess is very soon, they will open up February. Then they will probably let February dates fill up before releasing March dates.

So while it’s too late to make a long story short, in answer to your question: I do think they will continue to add additional audition dates. In fact, I am counting on it!

      Hope this helps :)

  78. Hi there,
First of all – love the site – THANK YOU. It has been extremely helpful navigating this process. My daughter is approved for an audition and we are very excited. Can you privately email me? I have a quick question but would prefer not to post. Thanks!

  79. I am auditioning for Creative Writing and I was wondering when, where, and how you turn in your portfolio?

    Posted by Alex | January 16, 2012, 10:44 am
    • Hi Alex. Have you gone on-line and started the application process yet? When you download the application, on the Creative Writing Conservatory portion, down at the bottom, are instructions for turning in your portfolio, which must also include a MANDATORY essay using the prompt provided. Your portfolio and essay must be submitted along with your application in order to be approved for an audition. Turn everything in together.

Do it soon! The creative writing department has a lot of reading to do with all the new applications coming in and the sooner you get your portfolio in the better, so I’ve heard. Your actual audition will be in a group of about 30 and will last for 45 minutes. You’ll be given an additional prompt and will do an impromtu essay.

      Good luck!

  80. I am auditioning for Integrated Arts, and I need to know what questions she will ask. I’m also wondering what kind of portfolio I should use to present Creative Writing and Photography. I already have my monologue set up, so I have to worry about the other disciplines now.

    Posted by Isabelle | December 31, 2011, 10:33 am
    • Hi Isabelle. My daughter was in Integrated Arts for two years beginning in 7th grade. She of course auditioned with Ms. Stafford and then we got to know her a bit from two years in the program. I also have sat through her Preview Sessions a couple of times. Have you done that? She is very explicit about what she is looking for. While I do not know for sure what she will ask you as it will most likely be related to what you bring to the audition, I do know she will probably ask you why you want to attend OCHSA. What I’ve heard her say is that she wants to know that the decision is being driven by you, and not your parents. I’ve heard her talk on multiple occasions about looking for ‘passion’ in those who audition and attend. She’ll want you to come across as professional (she despises flip-flops at audition time!) and personable. Be friendly, talkative and informed about your art and your motives. As far as your portfolio is concerned, there are lots of ways to put it together and I don’t think she cares as long as it’s neat, organized and she is easily able to look through it and get an idea of what you’ve been working on. Remember, you will only have about 10 minutes together. When my daughter auditioned, we had a simple View Binder with a cover page and then samples of work inside broken down by illustrated tab pages. We put each page inside sheet protectors to give it a nice polished look and feel. You could do something similar with your writing and photography samples.

You seem like you are articulate and organized! You are already off to a great start.

      Good luck!

  81. hi! i was looking into commercial dance, but heard its prretty tough now. Can you tell me any tips and what to expect at an audition? how many people show up, etc. how many people get accepted, are there videos online? thank you!

    Posted by chantel | November 6, 2011, 12:57 am
    • Hi Chantel! Hopefully you saw my response to Melinda about auditioning for a dance conservatory. Like I told her, I don’t have any personal experience with commercial dance, but I’ve heard it’s competitive too. Have you signed up for a Preview Day? You should definitely go to one of these: You will have the opportunity to sit with the Conservatory Director, who will give you an overview and answer all of your questions. If you are serious about auditioning, I highly recommend this as a first step. The next Preview Day is November 19th.

      Good luck!

  82. My question is in regards to classical and contemporary dance. The audition requirements say nothing more than, “students will partake in a 90 minute ballet class that incoporates a ballet bar and center”. Do you know if they are looking for someone who has a lot of experience or are they looking to see how well you do in the 90 minute class.
Also, When you say music theater is competative(I’ve heard that one a lot), do you know, approximatly, how many kids try out for how many spots.

    Posted by melinda | August 29, 2011, 8:59 pm
    • Hi Melinda! I don’t have any personal experience with CCD but I can tell you what I’ve heard. It’s pretty common for dancers to come to OCHSA with a good amount of experience. I would imagine that skill trumps sheer years of experience but in order to compete well in a 90 minute class setting you’ll have to know your stuff! A Preview Day is coming up. (3 sessions starting on October 15th. You can RSVP now). You should definitely go to one of these Preview Day sessions because you will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more from the Conservatory Director or his representative. Music & Theatre is the largest and most competitive conservatory but it’s not an impossible dream — new students get accepted every year! I am not sure of the number but those are the kinds of answers you can expect to receive when you attend a Preview Day. Remember, you don’t have to be in a dance conservatory to dance — my daughter is en pointe in Ballet II and she’s a creative writer; and there are performance opportunities through the Integrated Arts Conservatory, Montage and others.

      Good luck!

  83. What is the best way to prepare for the Visual Arts Audition?

    Posted by Brian | July 14, 2011, 5:21 pm
    • First, read the Audition Requirements and do exactly what it says. I think being prepared means having a solid portfolio. Also, in the Visual Arts Conservatory audition, prospective students are asked to draw something impromptu, of the director’s choosing. I’ve heard it can be their hand or maybe a display that has been set up. So being prepared also means being comfortable sketching something within a specified time frame. I hope this helps. Good luck!

  84. My child is shy but a great actress and singer does she stand a chance?

    Posted by Mark | July 12, 2011, 12:59 am
    • Of course! No where in any OCHSA literature does it say “the shy need not apply.” If she is a great actress and singer and meets the grade requirements, sounds like she stands a great chance. It’s all about the audition though; hopefully she can overcome her shyness and “act” her way through it. Music & Theatre is competitive; she may also want to consider auditioning for Classical Voice and Integrated Arts. My advice: start working on her auditioning skills now. You have about six months until audition time. Good luck!
